Obituary of Byron F. Goodwin

   Byron F. Goodwin, age 87, of Hancock, passed away unexpectedly, May 27, 2019 at his home.

    He was born February 5, 1932 in Hancock, the son of Leon and Pearl (Powell) Goodwin. He married Marcella Kortas on April 16, 1955 in Utica, MI.

    Byron was a graduate of Westfield High School. After graduation he served his country in the United States Air Force from 1949 until 1972. After moving back to the Hancock area, Byron and Marcella bought Goodwin’s Grocery store and ran it for several years. Following that, they purchased the Ramble Inn Bowling Alley in Hancock and ran it for 13 years. Byron was a family man who had a love of music and singing and enjoyed entertaining friends and family with both. He was also an avid gardener who loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing. His other interests were many with baseball and cheering on the Green Bay Packers at the top of the list. Occasional trips to the casino with his wife were also a great enjoyment. Byron was a past Commander of American Legion Post 343 and past President of the Hancock Lions Club.

    He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marcella Goodwin, Hancock; his children, Reinie (Gregg) Ruffalo, Ron (Kathy) Goodwin, Teresa Goodwin, Wendy (John) Caves, Greg Goodwin, Tom (Mariah) Goodwin, Tim (Donica) Goodwin, Patrick (Julie) Goodwin and Son in Law Dave Wilkins; his 25 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; brother Leon (Dawn) Goodwin; further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many special friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Valerie Wilkins, his brothers, Harley Goodwin, Herbert Goodwin, Leslie Goodwin and sisters, Dorene Schimelpfenig, Lavonne Lawrence and Wanda Pugh.

    A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Plainfield with full military honors to follow. Visitation will be held on Friday evening from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. in the Stahl Funeral Home and from 9:30 a.m. Saturday until the time of services at the church.
